A New Era of Excellence: Black-Owned Distilleries Pushing Boundaries
The American spirits industry is witnessing a dynamic transformation, fueled by the innovation, passion, and unwavering dedication of Black-owned distilleries. At DISTRYB, we are thrilled to highlight the recent groundbreaking achievements, exciting new releases, and significant business milestones that underscore the vibrant and growing influence of Black entrepreneurs in craft distilling across the United States. These brands are not just crafting exceptional spirits; they are building legacies, fostering community, and driving innovation that resonates throughout the industry.
Award-Winning Whiskeys and Distilleries Emerge
The whiskey category, a cornerstone of American spirits, has seen remarkable growth from Black-owned brands. A shining example is the Arthur Wheeler Spirits Company, which has rapidly risen to prominence. Opening its doors in October 2024, this Maryland-based brand quickly garnered significant acclaim, being recognized as “America's most awarded Black-owned whiskey brand of 2025” outside of industry titan Uncle Nearest. Their impressive haul includes multiple gold and silver medals at the London International Spirits Competition and three Gold Medals at the International Bartender Spirits Awards, where they also clinched the coveted honor of “Best Overall Craft Whiskey” for their Cask Strength Bourbon, 1932 Bourbon Whiskey, and Toasted Stave.
Another monumental entry into the whiskey market is SirDavis Whisky, launched in 2024 as a joint venture between global icon Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Moët Hennessy. This American rye-style whisky pays tribute to Beyoncé's great-grandfather, Davis Hogue, a Prohibition-era moonshiner and farmer. SirDavis Whisky has already made its mark, securing Platinum and “Best in Class” for American Whiskey at the 2024 SIP Awards and achieving an impressive 93 points at the 2024 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
The innovation continues with New Dawn Distilling, a Black-woman-owned distillery celebrated for its distinctive approach. Their New Dawn Bourbon was recognized as a Top Pick for 2025 by R&B Magazine, lauded for its complex caramel and spice notes, elegant design, and inspiring story. The brand also secured Silver at the 2024 USA Spirits Ratings and achieved Platinum at the 2025 L.A. Spirits Awards. Notably, New Dawn Distilling received a SIP Awards Innovation Award in 2025 for its creative methods in grain sourcing and flavor expression, showcasing its commitment to pushing craft boundaries.
Also making waves in whiskey is Amber & Opal Honey Botanical Rye Whiskey, which launched in 2024 and became available in early 2025. This distinctive 2-year straight rye whiskey is infused with orange blossom honey, Lapsang Souchong tea, cinnamon, ginger, and fig flavors, demonstrating a creative approach to flavored whiskey. The Red Hazel Whiskey brand, founded in 2018 by siblings Tk Burtin-Johnson and Ty Burtin, also continues to gain recognition, catching the attention of Pronghorn in 2024 for its smooth, cinnamon-infused blended aged whiskey.
And, of course, the trailblazing Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, under the leadership of CEO Fawn Weaver and Master Blender Victoria Eady Butler (a fifth-generation descendant of Nathan “Nearest” Green), continues its incredible trajectory as the fastest-growing and top-selling Black-owned spirit brand in U.S. history.
Gin Innovations and Milestones
The gin category is equally vibrant with Black-owned brands introducing exciting new profiles and achieving significant milestones. The Old G, a premium London Dry gin, made headlines by winning “Best Gin in Show” at the 2025 Global Spirit Awards with an impressive score of 98 points. Since its debut in 2024, The Old G, founded by Peter Ibrahim and Hebru Brantley, has sold over 2,000 cases and recently launched a portable 200ml “Pocket Old G,” highlighting both its quality and innovative marketing.
Louisville saw the launch of West End Gin in 2024, created by Dr. Dawn and Stacey Wade. This citrus-forward gin not only offers a refined taste profile but also carries a powerful community mission, dedicating $1 from every bottle sold to support local and national communities. A second expression, “The Rose Ann Edition,” is anticipated to launch soon, further expanding their innovative offerings.
From the heart of New York City, Saints Gin, born from the experiments of self-taught distillers Matthew and Craig, is making its way to market. This citrus-forward, spice-laced gin, lauded for its smoothness, launched a crowdfunding campaign in April 2025 to fuel its next chapter. Additionally, HH Bespoke Spirits from Harlem, known for capturing the essence of the Harlem Renaissance, continues to offer its distinct small-batch gin alongside rum and vodka.
Vodka Expansion and Unique Offerings
In the vodka segment, Mishka Premium Vodka, produced by This Life Forever, Inc. (Pennsylvania's first Black-owned distillery founded by Russell Fletcher in 2014), is undergoing significant expansion. Early 2026 will see the opening of a new manufacturing and production facility in Allentown. Mishka has already earned Double Gold and Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2023, cementing its reputation for quality. Fou-Dré Vodka and Bleu Vodka (likely related to Victor George Spirits, which has an Old Sistrunk Distillery coming in 2025) are also notable players. The platform also includes Du Nord Foundation Vodka, a product of Du Nord Social Spirits, which holds the distinction of being America's first legal Black-owned distillery and remains a vital force in community economic initiatives.
Further innovations include Geneba Tequila, founded by IngridLaVon and set to debut in 2025. Positioned as a “Tequila for women,” it will be available in blanco and reposado expressions, aiming to revolutionize the industry. Afrique Vodka, a female-founded brand by Jayne Doherty and Beverley Annan-Forson, also launched in 2025, distinguishing itself by blending tropical fruits and using a sugar beet base for an exceptionally smooth finish.
Rum's Rich and Evolving Landscape
The rum category continues to celebrate its rich heritage while embracing modern craft. Ten to One Rum, Marc Farrell's Caribbean-inspired line, continues to thrive, even boasting pop superstar Rihanna as an investor. Equiano Rum, co-founded by Ian Burrell in 2020 and named after Olaudar Equiano (an enslaved man who bought his freedom selling rum), holds the unique distinction of being the world's first African-Caribbean rum, blending spirits from Mauritius and Barbados and aged for 8-10 years. Striped Lion Spiced Rum, distilled from organic American molasses in Woodbury, New Jersey, showcases local craft with its 100% pot-distilled approach.
Liqueurs and Industry Support
In the liqueur space, Sorel Liqueur, by Jackie Summers, continues its impressive resurgence. Relaunched in 2021 after a hiatus, the multi-award-winning brand is now available in 37 states, with plans for nationwide expansion across the continental U.S. by the end of 2024.
Underpinning much of this growth and visibility is organizations like Pronghorn, a business dedicated to fostering Black-owned companies within the spirits industry. By providing capital, knowledge, and resources, Pronghorn plays a crucial role in amplifying Black-owned brands and ensuring their sustained success and representation.
The landscape of Black-owned distilleries in the U.S. is not just expanding; it's redefining what excellence means in the spirits world. With each new release, award, and business milestone, these innovative brands are enriching the industry, celebrating diverse heritage, and carving out a powerful, lasting legacy. DISTRYB is proud to shine a light on their incredible journeys and encourages you to explore and support these exceptional spirits.
