A New Era for Black-Owned Craft Beer: Growth, Collaboration, and Community
At DISTRYB, we're dedicated to spotlighting the incredible innovation and resilience within the Black-owned beverage industry. The craft beer sector, in particular, continues to demonstrate remarkable growth, marked by significant new openings, strategic collaborations, and a powerful emphasis on community engagement. This recent surge signals a vibrant, evolving landscape where Black brewers are not only crafting exceptional beers but also building vital cultural spaces and economic opportunities across the United States.
The past year has delivered pivotal moments that underscore the industry's dynamism. From landmark mergers redefining operational scale to innovative new breweries setting down roots, and major festivals amplifying Black voices, the trajectory is clearly upward. We're witnessing a powerful movement that is not just about making beer, but about making history and fostering an inclusive future for craft beverage enthusiasts everywhere.
Strategic Alliances Strengthening the Industry
One of the most impactful developments is the formation of the Circle of Crowns Beverage Group (CCBG) in April 2024. This significant alliance brought together Crowns & Hops Brewing Co. of Inglewood, California, and Full Circle Brewing Co. of Fresno, California, which is recognized as the largest Black-owned production brewery in the U.S.. This merger is a strategic move to address systemic challenges faced by Black-owned businesses in the sector, aiming to streamline operations in production, sales, and marketing. By pooling their strengths and leveraging existing infrastructure and distribution networks, CCBG seeks to enhance the accessibility of their brands to consumers and retailers globally. As Arthur Moye, CEO and founder of Full Circle Brewing, stated, this alliance is better positioned to "maximize growth and bring more consumers craft beverages with an aspirational, relevant connection to black culture."
Exciting New Openings and Expansions
The spirit of entrepreneurship is thriving, with several new Black-owned breweries and beverage brands launching or expanding:
- Two Locals Brewing Company (Philadelphia, PA): Making history as Philadelphia’s first Black-owned brewery, Two Locals officially opened its 15-barrel brewery and taproom on January 31, 2024. Brothers Richard and Mengistu established their LLC in 2018 and, after years of contract brewing and collaborations, realized their dream of a dedicated space.
- Bubble Line Brewing Company (St. Paul, MN): Slated to open in early 2025, Bubble Line Brewing Company will become Minnesota's first Black woman-owned brewery. Founder Brittney Mikell envisions a welcoming, plant-filled oasis in the historically Black Rondo neighborhood, offering not just diverse beers but also non-alcoholic options, kid-friendly spaces, and apprenticeship programs for brewers of color.
- Diamond Farm Winery and Brewery (Nokesville, VA): Formerly Oasis Farm Brewery and Winery, this new Black-owned venture celebrated its grand opening events in April 2024. With plans to unveil a public tasting room in spring 2025 and an elegant manor house later that year, Diamond Farm aims to be a welcoming destination focused on warmth, hospitality, and family values.
- Grown Folks (Los Angeles, CA): Launched in 2024 by Danica Dias, Grown Folks is a Black- and woman-owned beverage brand that creatively combines craft beer, such as its Front Porch American light lager, with soul food-inspired hard seltzers like Peach Cobbler and Ambrosia flavors. Dias, a hospitality professional, developed the brand to showcase her Louisiana Creole heritage.
- Policy Kings Brewery (Salt Lake City, UT): Utah’s first Black-owned brewery, Policy Kings, is expanding its reach by relocating from Cedar City to Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake City Council approved a $75,000 Economic Development Loan Fund (EDLF) loan in March 2025 to support the establishment of their new brewpub, which will continue to offer a welcoming space for community, culture, and craft beer.
Community Initiatives and Celebrations
Beyond new businesses, the Black craft beer community is fostering connections and support through impactful initiatives and large-scale events:
- NB2A Brewing Equipment Donation Grants: The National Black Brewers Association (NB2A) continues its mission to empower Black brewery owners and diversify the industry. In a significant initiative, the NB2A announced its 2024 Brewing Equipment Donation Grants, providing a 20BBL brewhouse to Cajun Fire Brewing in New Orleans, LA, and a packaging line to Montclair Brewery in Montclair, New Jersey. These donations, generously provided by Russian River Brewing Company and Optimism Brewing, respectively, directly address capital and equipment as major barriers to entry in the craft beer industry.
- Black Brewer's Day: The NB2A also introduced Black Brewer's Day, an annual observation on October 10th, dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the historical and ongoing contributions of Black beer brewers. As of October 2023, 16 cities and states across the U.S. had already officially recognized this important day.
- Barrel & Flow Fest (Pittsburgh, PA): Recognized as the best beer festival in the country in both 2023 and 2024, the Barrel & Flow Fest is a cornerstone event for the Black craft beverage community. The festival, scheduled for August 8, 2026, will once again feature over 35 Black-owned breweries and distilleries, along with more than 50 unique craft brew collaborations, celebrating Black artists, musicians, chefs, and brewers.
- Blacktoberfest™ (Durham, NC): Powered by Proximity Brewing Company, Blacktoberfest™ is celebrating its sixth year as a vibrant showcase of craft beer, culinary experiences, and live performances. This community gathering, held in Garland Court in Old East Durham, features 20 breweries and collaborators, alongside six Black-owned wine and spirits brands, reinforcing its commitment to blending culture, community, and craft beer.
- Peoples Beer Fest (California): California's largest Black beer festival, Peoples Beer Fest, powered by Oak Park Brewing Co., continues to amplify Black brewers and brands. This block party features over 30 breweries, wineries, and cideries, local artists, and live performances, with a portion of event proceeds benefiting the NB2A.
- Crafted For Action Craft Beer Summit (Atlanta, GA): Aimed at promoting diversity in craft beer, the Crafted For Action Craft Beer Summit will host its sixth annual gathering in Atlanta in June. This summit includes panels, tastings, and cultural experiences, further solidifying Atlanta as a hub for Black craft beer innovation and community.
The landscape of Black-owned breweries and craft beer brands is undeniably vibrant and dynamic. These recent developments — from strategic partnerships like CCBG to the opening of pioneering ventures like Two Locals and Bubble Line, and the sustained energy of community events like Barrel & Flow and Blacktoberfest™ — highlight a powerful momentum. DISTRYB is proud to document and celebrate these achievements, as Black entrepreneurs continue to break barriers, innovate, and enrich the diverse tapestry of America's beverage industry. We encourage you to seek out and support these brands, raising a glass to the culture, craftsmanship, and community they represent.
