In a powerful affirmation of its unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation, Du Nord Social Spirits, the groundbreaking Black-owned distillery based in Minneapolis, recently garnered Gold Medals at the prestigious 2025 Annual American Craft Spirits Competition. These significant accolades, awarded for its Foundation Vodka and Apple Liquor, highlight the brand’s sustained success and its profound contributions to the evolving landscape of American craft spirits.

Founded in 2013 by the visionary team of Chris and Shanelle Montana, Du Nord Social Spirits holds a unique and vital place in American distilling history. It proudly stands as the first Black-owned distillery in the United States to distill its own products from grain to glass. The Montanas embarked on this entrepreneurial journey with a vision extending far beyond simply crafting high-quality spirits; they aimed to actively reshape the spirits industry by fostering inclusivity, championing diversity, and opening doors for historically underrepresented entrepreneurs.

Chris Montana, who has also served as a former President of the American Craft Spirits Association, has consistently utilized his platform to advocate for greater diversity and equity within the spirits world. His leadership has been instrumental in transforming his initial “tiny little distillery in South Minneapolis” into an internationally recognized brand, celebrated not only for its award-winning spirits but also for its profound social mission.

The recent Gold Medals are the latest in a series of impressive accomplishments for Du Nord Social Spirits. Early in its journey, less than a year after its initial launch, the distillery earned a coveted Triple Gold Award at the Microliquor Spirit Awards. Demonstrating a flair for innovation in consumer experience, Montana further enhanced the brand’s presence in 2015 by opening Minnesota’s first cocktail room, creating a vibrant and welcoming space for the community to discover and enjoy their meticulously crafted spirits. A particularly notable milestone was achieved in October 2022 when Delta Air Lines selected Du Nord’s Foundation Vodka to be served on all domestic flights, significantly expanding their reach to a national audience.

Beyond the impressive tally of awards and expanding market presence, the true essence of Du Nord’s mission is deeply rooted in its commitment to community upliftment and social impact. In the challenging aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and the subsequent public unrest that swept through Minneapolis in 2020, Chris and Shanelle Montana transformed an initial emergency fundraiser into the enduring non-profit Du Nord Foundation. This foundation serves as a long-term investment vehicle, strategically dedicated to combating inequity and providing crucial support to entrepreneurs and business leaders of color. This proactive and deeply impactful approach underscores the brand’s core philosophy: that true success is measured not solely by commercial accolades but also by its tangible and lasting positive impact on society.

The inspiring journey of Du Nord Social Spirits exemplifies resilience, innovation, and purpose. From meticulously sourcing grain from Shanelle’s family farm to developing a diverse portfolio of award-winning vodka, gin, whiskey, and liqueurs, their unwavering dedication to quality and community has carved a significant and enduring path in the American spirits industry. As the American craft spirits landscape continues its exciting trajectory of growth and diversification, Du Nord stands as a shining example of how Black-owned distilleries are not just producing exceptional beverages but also driving meaningful social change and fostering a more equitable and inclusive future for all. Their compelling story serves as a powerful reminder that every sip can indeed be a celebration of history, innovation, and profound community impact.

The Dynamic Growth of Black-Owned Distilleries

Du Nord’s ongoing success is emblematic of a broader, dynamic movement within the American spirits industry, where Black-owned distilleries are increasingly making their indelible mark. These trailblazing brands are actively breaking down historical barriers and enriching the industry with fresh perspectives, unique flavor profiles, and innovative business models. Historically, the distilling world, particularly bourbon, has been fraught with a history of exclusion, making the emergence of Black-owned distilleries a crucial step towards diversification and acknowledgment of overlooked contributions.

For instance, Brough Brothers Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, proudly holds the distinction of being the state’s first African American-owned distillery to open its doors. As we recently highlighted in our article, “Brough Brothers Distillery Unveils New Bourbons, Expands Louisville Presence,” they continue to expand their impressive offerings and footprint in the heart of bourbon country. Their entry into the Kentucky Distillers’ Association marked a significant milestone, a welcome breakthrough in the association’s 141-year history.

Similarly, Fresh Bourbon Distilling Co., also based in Kentucky, has been making significant strides. Their recent legal victory, as detailed in “Fresh Bourbon Distilling Co. Secures Landmark Legal Victory, Fuels Expansion Dreams,” paves the way for their ambitious expansion plans, showcasing the formidable dynamism within Black-owned spirits ventures. Fresh Bourbon has also distinguished itself as one of the first African American-owned distilling companies in Kentucky to make spirits with a unique recipe from scratch in Lexington.

Even amidst complex business challenges, the spirit of Black entrepreneurship thrives. While Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey has navigated receivership, as detailed in “Delta Dirt Distillery Unveils Innovative Spirit and Earns Top Honors,” it remains a powerful beacon of Black excellence and historical homage in the spirits industry, continuing to honor the legacy of Nathan “Nearest” Green. Its status is currently recovering with an improving trajectory, having entered a non-binding agreement for a potential sale of assets to an African-American owned and led investment firm, remaining in receivership amid ongoing insolvency and legal challenges.

Other brands are also introducing exciting new releases and expanding their presence. The Arthur Wheeler Spirits Company, for example, launched its 1932 Bourbon in October 2024, emphasizing quality, experimentation, and Black ownership. Maryland also saw the debut of Amber & Opal Honey Botanical Rye Whiskey in late 2024, with its unique blend of flavors including honey, Lapsang Souchong tea, cinnamon, ginger, and fig. These brands, among others, are not only creating exceptional products but also building lasting legacies, generating economic opportunities, and inspiring a new generation of Black entrepreneurs to innovate and excel in the spirits industry.
