Du Nord Social Spirits

Founded by Chris and Shanelle Montana · Minneapolis, MN

The Story

Du Nord Social Spirits was founded in Minneapolis, MN, in 2013 by Chris and Shanelle Montana. Chris Montana, a former attorney and congressional aide, transitioned his career to distilling, with Shanelle's family farm providing grain for their spirits. Initially known as Du Nord Craft Spirits, the company rebranded to Du Nord Social Spirits in 2020, reflecting a commitment to social impact and economic justice following the murder of George Floyd. The company established the Du Nord Foundation with a purpose to create economic wealth for historically excluded communities.

How we know this

On this being a Black-owned business:

“Du Nord Social Spirits is America's first Black-owned distillery, but that alone isn't what makes the brand so special.”
