The 8 Trill Pils Initiative: Advancing Racial Equity in Craft Beer Entrepreneurship

The 8 Trill Pils Initiative is a movement dedicated to fostering racial equity and economic empowerment for Black entrepreneurs within the craft beer industry. It provides crucial financial grants, business resources, and mentorship to support the establishment and growth of Black-owned breweries.

The 8 Trill Pils Initiative stands as a pivotal movement within the craft beer industry, specifically designed to address systemic racial inequities and empower Black entrepreneurs. Launched by Beny Ashburn and Teo Hunter, co-founders of Crowns & Hops Brewing Co., the initiative is driven by a mission to significantly increase Black ownership and representation in a sector that has historically lacked diversity.

The initiative’s name, “8 Trill Pils,” is directly inspired by a 2018 study from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, titled “The Business Case for Racial Equity,” which projected that the United States economy could realize an additional $8 trillion in GDP by 2050 if racial disparities in areas like health, education, incarceration, and employment were eliminated. Ashburn and Hunter applied this economic insight to the craft beer landscape, recognizing that greater racial equity within the industry would not only benefit Black communities but also contribute substantially to the overall economic well-being of the nation.

Addressing Disparity in Craft Beer Ownership

Despite the growing popularity and economic impact of craft beer, Black-owned breweries constitute less than one percent of the more than 9,000 craft breweries in the U.S. This stark underrepresentation reflects a broader issue of limited access to capital, resources, and foundational business support for Black entrepreneurs in the industry. The 8 Trill Pils Initiative was conceived to confront these barriers directly, aiming to elevate Black brewery ownership to 13%, a figure that reflects the approximate percentage of Black people in the U.S. population.

Key Components and Support Mechanisms

At the core of the 8 Trill Pils Initiative is the 8 Trill Pils Fund, a development fund established to provide critical financial grants and resources to Black-owned breweries at various stages of their development, from initial planning to operational growth and resource management. In its inaugural year, the fund distributed $100,000 to five different Black-owned craft beer brands, demonstrating a tangible commitment to fostering economic mobility.

Beyond financial assistance, the initiative emphasizes mentorship and strategic guidance. It seeks to equip Black entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools necessary to build sustainable businesses, including support in marketing, legal assistance, and operational best practices. This holistic approach acknowledges that success in the craft beer industry requires more than just a passion for brewing; it demands robust business acumen and strong industry connections.

The 8 Trillion Allies Program

A crucial extension of the initiative is the 8 Trillion Allies program, which invites other breweries, industry organizations, and even entities outside the craft beer sector to contribute to the mission. Allies can participate as “Collaborators” or “Contributors.” Collaborators, often established breweries, engage in joint brewing projects with existing or aspiring Black-owned breweries under the Eight Trillion Allies Collaboration Series. A portion, or sometimes all, of the proceeds from these collaborations are directed to the 8 Trill Pils Fund. Collaborators are also encouraged to provide mentorship, sharing business practices and industry insights. “Contributors” are organizations that provide capital, resources, or industry knowledge to Black-owned breweries through the 8 Trill Pils Fund, without necessarily engaging in product collaborations.

For instance, Montclair Brewery, a Black-owned establishment in New Jersey, benefited significantly from the 8 Trill Pils Fund, utilizing the grant to acquire its own canning line. This investment enhanced their packaging capabilities and supported their growth trajectory, illustrating the direct impact of the initiative’s financial support. Broader Impact and Industry Context

The 8 Trill Pils Initiative operates within a broader movement advocating for diversity and inclusion across the beverage alcohol industry. It joins other significant efforts, such as the National Black Brewers Association and initiatives like “Black Is Beautiful,” which was launched by Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Souls Brewing Co. in 2020 to raise awareness for racial injustice and generate funds for racial justice organizations. As of May 16, 2026, the Texas license 104759592 for Weathered Souls Brewing Co. was expired. These collective efforts highlight a growing industry commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive environment for Black talent and entrepreneurship.

By directly addressing the lack of capital and resources, fostering mentorship, and building a network of allies, the 8 Trill Pils Initiative serves as a powerful model for driving systemic change and ensuring that the craft beer industry truly reflects the diversity of its consumers and the broader American economy. Its ongoing efforts aim to dismantle historical barriers and build a sustainable pathway for Black-owned breweries to thrive, thereby maximizing the industry’s potential for innovation and growth.
