Montclair Brewery: Crafting Community and Culture in New Jersey

Montclair Brewery, located in Montclair, New Jersey, stands as a pioneering Black-owned microbrewery, taproom, and beer garden, co-founded by the husband-and-wife team Denise and Leopold 'Leo' Sawadogo (also referred to as Sergeant in some contexts). Officially opening its doors in October 2018, the brewery quickly established itself as a vibrant cultural hub in the Montclair community and the wider New Jersey area, with a mission to foster community 'one beer at a time.'

Founders and Vision

Leo Sawadogo, originally from Burkina Faso in West Africa, brings a rich culinary background to the brewery as a trained pastry chef and an avid homebrewer of over two decades. His passion for brewing was sparked in childhood, observing his mother make traditional beer in his home country. Denise Ford Sawadogo, born in Brooklyn with Jamaican heritage and a professional background in marketing, complements Leo's brewing expertise with her business acumen and vision for brand development. Together, their diverse cultural backgrounds — African and Caribbean — profoundly influence the brewery’s ethos and its distinctive beer offerings.

The Sawadogos' goal was not only to create a successful business but also to build an inclusive and welcoming space for both seasoned craft beer enthusiasts and newcomers. Their mission emphasizes promoting diversity within the craft beer community, a sector where Black-owned breweries are still relatively rare.

Culturally Inspired Brews

Montclair Brewery is celebrated for its unique array of beers that often infuse traditional African and Caribbean ingredients and flavors. This commitment to cultural storytelling through beer is evident in many of their signature brews:

  • Baobiere Golden Ale: A highlight, this golden ale is brewed with the fruit of the African baobab tree, often referred to as the “Tree of Life,” and earned a silver medal at the New York International Beer Competition.
  • Kingston Porter: Named after the capital city of Jamaica, this beer honors Denise’s family heritage.
  • Motherland Sorghum Beer: A gluten-free brew inspired by traditional African sorghum beers.
  • Black is Beautiful Imperial Stout: As part of a global collaboration initiated by Weathered Souls Brewing Co., Montclair Brewery’s version incorporates baobab fruit, with a portion of proceeds often donated to organizations like the National Black Brewers Association.
  • Maya Double IPA: A juicy, fruity Double IPA with mango puree, initially brewed to honor Dr. Maya Angelou for Women’s History Month.
  • Jubilee Red Ale: Brewed with hibiscus flowers, this ale commemorates the Juneteenth holiday.

The brewery also consistently features a 'Black History Month Beer Series' annually, releasing special brews that honor prominent figures and moments from the African diaspora, including Harriet Tubman, Chadwick Boseman, Larry Doby, Gil Noble, Kobe Bryant, Patrice Lumumba, and the Montclair African-American Heritage Foundation.

Community Engagement and Impact

From its inception, Montclair Brewery has prioritized its role as a community anchor. The brewery provides a welcoming atmosphere for families and is even dog-friendly, featuring both an indoor taproom and an outdoor beer garden, which was expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic to adapt to new operating conditions.

Beyond its regular offerings, the brewery hosts a variety of cultural events, including live music featuring genres from the African diaspora such as jazz, R&B, blues, soul, and funk, and showcases artwork from local artists. These events, alongside celebrations for occasions like Jamaica Independence Day, reinforce the brewery’s commitment to its cultural roots and community building.

Denise Ford Sawadogo's dedication to the broader Black craft beer movement extends to her role on the board of the National Black Brewers Association, working to increase representation and opportunities for Black entrepreneurs in the industry. In October 2024, Montclair Brewery announced plans for expansion with a second location in East Orange, New Jersey. This expansion aims to significantly increase brewing capacity, make their beers accessible to more communities, and create additional local job opportunities, further solidifying their impact and reach.

Montclair Brewery continues to be more than just a place to enjoy craft beer; it is a testament to the power of entrepreneurship rooted in cultural celebration and a strong dedication to community enrichment, embodying the spirit of the Black-owned craft beer movement in the United States.
