Washington D.C.’s vibrant craft beer scene has reached a new milestone with the grand opening of Urban Garden Brewing, the city’s first Black woman-owned brewery. Founded by D.C. native Eamoni Collier, the brewery officially opened its doors on June 19, 2026, a date chosen to commemorate Juneteenth and symbolize liberation, self-determination, and lasting legacies.
Located at 624 T Street NW in the historic Shaw neighborhood, the physical space, known as Urban Garden Brewhouse, is more than just a brewery; it is a cultural gathering place where craft beverages, soulful food, art, and heritage converge. Collier's vision for Urban Garden Brewing is rooted in a deep connection to her family and the community. The brewhouse pays tribute to her late grandfather, Joe Tate, a renowned go-go musician who performed at the nearby Howard Theatre. The venue features the Joe Tate Listening Lounge, adorned with vinyl records and artwork celebrating his musical legacy, fostering an environment where history is honored and culture is celebrated.
Collier's journey into brewing began with homebrewing experiments in her uncle's backyard, followed by gaining experience at Right Proper Brewing Company. She officially launched Urban Garden Brewing in 2022, developing unique recipes that quickly gained traction, with her beers appearing in over 40 bars, restaurants, and liquor stores across D.C. This unique offering includes specialty craft beers and a botanical cocktail program featuring alcohol-free mocktails infused with adaptogens, herbs, and botanicals, designed to refresh and inspire.
The opening of Urban Garden Brewing is a significant moment for the craft beer landscape, addressing the underrepresentation of Black individuals, particularly Black women, in brewery ownership. According to industry data, Black-owned breweries constitute less than one percent of the market share, and only about two percent of breweries are fully owned by women. Collier expressed that witnessing this lack of diversity motivated her to create an inclusive space that truly reflects broader representation. Her efforts also extend to advocating for diversity and inclusion within the industry, including mentoring aspiring brewers, especially women and people of color.
Beyond its innovative beers, Urban Garden Brewing is designed to be a community hub, a “second home” for the neighborhood.
