This annual initiative transcends mere brewing, transforming each bottle and tap pour into a vibrant celebration of African heritage, influential Black figures, and the rich tapestry of Black history. Co-owners Leo and Denise Ford Sawadogo skillfully blend their passion for craft beer with a deep commitment to cultural storytelling, offering unique brews that educate and inspire their community. Headlining the 2026 collection is the new Lumumba Smoked Ale, a bold, whiskey-style malt beer crafted in honor of Patrice Lumumba. Lumumba, the Congolese nationalist leader, played a crucial role in leading the Democratic Republic of Congo to independence in 1960, becoming its first Prime Minister. His legacy, though tragically cut short in 1961 amidst Cold War political tensions, continues to symbolize sovereignty, independence, and African self-determination. The decision to honor Lumumba was particularly timely, sparked by renewed global attention during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, where a devoted Congolese supporter gained international recognition for attending matches dressed as Lumumba and holding a symbolic frozen pose. This striking tribute brought Lumumba’s historical significance back into global conversation, inspiring the Sawadogos to dedicate a brew to his memory.
Leo Sawadogo, co-owner and Head Brewer, expressed his personal connection to the inspiration. “As a former football/soccer player, coach, and lifelong fan of the tournament, seeing that powerful tribute to Lumumba during the matches was incredibly moving,” he noted. “Lumumba represents courage, leadership, and the pursuit of independence—values that deserve continued recognition. Creating this beer was our way of honoring that legacy while sharing an important story with our community.” The Lumumba Smoked Ale itself delivers a smooth malt profile layered with a refined smoky character, creating a distinctive yet approachable drinking experience that reflects the complexity and depth of its namesake’s story. Its can label even features a photo of the well-known Lumumba statue in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, alongside a small image of the tournament’s memorable fan, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga.
Complementing the Lumumba Smoked Ale, Montclair Brewery also brought back the much-loved Doby Caramel Pale Ale. This limited-edition American pale ale pays tribute to baseball icon and former Montclair resident, Larry Doby. Doby holds a significant place in sports history as the second Black player to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier, just eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson, and the first player of color in the American League. The beer itself features pine and citrus hop flavors, balanced with toasty notes of caramel, mirroring the nuanced story of a man who broke barriers with both grace and power.
