In a significant milestone for the non-alcoholic beverage industry and Black entrepreneurship, HELLO MAMÁ, the pioneering alcohol-free wine and beverage brand founded by Dr. Ashley Hunt-Poole, has announced its expansion into major national retailers Walmart and Sam’s Club. This widespread distribution marks a pivotal moment for the Alabama-born brand, making its innovative alcohol-free options accessible to consumers across numerous states.
Dr. Hunt-Poole, an alumna of Alabama A&M University, initially conceived the idea for her brand, then known as 'Mocktails for Mommy,' in 2020 while pregnant and seeking high-quality non-alcoholic alternatives. Her personal journey to create sophisticated, flavorful zero-proof options led her to experiment with fresh fruits to mimic the taste of classic cocktails like margaritas. This kitchen-born endeavor quickly evolved into what is now HELLO MAMÁ, recognized as Alabama’s first Black woman-owned alcohol-free wine and beverage brand.
The brand's growth journey has been propelled by a commitment to offering discerning consumers a refined alternative to alcoholic drinks. Dr. Hunt-Poole utilized social media to share her concoctions and educate the public on crafting mocktails at home, which ultimately inspired her to establish her beverage company.
The latest expansion sees HELLO MAMÁ products gracing the shelves of Sam's Club stores across Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Furthermore, the brand has entered Walmart locations in Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Maryland, New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and California, among other states. This extensive reach underscores the increasing demand for diverse and high-quality non-alcoholic options in the modern beverage market.
“Seeing my wine officially in Sam’s Club means the world to me,” Dr. Hunt-Poole shared. “It proves that you can start something and, as long as you have tenacity, you can achieve anything.” This sentiment resonates with the broader 'sober-curious' movement that continues to gain momentum across the United States. Consumers are increasingly seeking mindful drinking choices, whether for health reasons, personal preference, or simply to enjoy complex flavors without alcohol.
The success of HELLO MAMÁ reflects a significant shift in the beverage landscape, where Black-owned brands are not only innovating but also securing prominent positions in mainstream retail. This expansion not only elevates HELLO MAMÁ but also paves the way for other Black entrepreneurs in the rapidly growing non-alcoholic sector.
This achievement builds on a vibrant landscape of Black-owned beverage innovation, including other non-alcoholic brands like MEDASE Cocktails, which recently launched in Erewhon Market, as we reported in a recent post.
