Founded in 2017 by entrepreneur and acclaimed sommelier Tahiirah Habibi, the organization emerged from a recognition of historical underrepresentation and a desire to create inclusive spaces where people of color are celebrated and supported in their wine journeys, whether as consumers or professionals.

Founding and Vision

Tahiirah Habibi's journey into the wine industry was marked by her passion and expertise, honed through leadership roles in prestigious restaurants, including J&G Grill and Michael's Genuine. However, she frequently encountered a lack of diversity and often felt she did not belong in traditionally white-dominated wine spaces. This personal experience fueled her entrepreneurial spirit and a clear vision to give back to the Black community, which had been historically overlooked and underrepresented in wine.

In 2017, Habibi launched The Hue Society as a community-based organization to tackle these disparities. Her foundational belief was that connections are healing and that a dedicated hub was needed where individuals from diverse backgrounds could find information on Black wine culture, mentorship, and a safe environment for learning and growth. The Hue Society's mission is unequivocally centered on redefining the wine industry through education, cultural advocacy, and economic empowerment, envisioning a world where wine is a space of belonging, representation, and opportunity for all.

  • Wine Tastings: Regular blind, in-person, or virtual wine tastings held by local chapters to aid in palate development.
  • Workshops: Professional development workshops cover critical areas such as wine education, marketing and branding, winemaking, writing/journalism, sales, business strategies, and navigating distributor/importing relationships.
  • Exam Preparation: The society offers study groups and specially created study guides, along with discounted rates for certification exams, to help members advance their qualifications.
  • Industry Resources and Mentorship: Members benefit from a network that offers vital industry connections and mentorship from influential professionals reshaping the wine landscape.

Cultural Advocacy and Community Building

  • Wine & Culture Fest: This annual festival is celebrated as the largest wine festival dedicated to consumer education, brand awareness, industry advancement, and cultural experiences through a Black lens. It features interactive sessions from industry mavens, tastings of diverse selections, and premiere social events that unite the industry.
  • Black Wine Experience: An important annual event, the Black Wine Experience brings together entrepreneurs, personalities, and producers from the Black wine community, providing a platform for networking, panel discussions, and tastings.
  • Partnerships: The Hue Society actively seeks partnerships to expand its reach and opportunities. Notably, in 2024, it launched a collaboration with Vinitaly International Academy (VIA), establishing its first international chapter in Italy and offering fee-waiver opportunities for members to participate in VIA's prestigious Italian Wine Ambassador course.
  • Chapters: With chapters across the country, The Hue Society extends its community-building efforts locally, enriching key demographics through curated events and gatherings.

Impact and Recognition

Tahiirah Habibi's leadership and vision have earned her widespread recognition. In 2020, she became the first Black woman to grace the cover of Wine Enthusiast Magazine, and in 2022, the magazine honored The Hue Society with the Social Visionary of the Year award as part of its annual Wine Star Awards. She also received the Advocate of the Year award from VinePair Magazine.

The organization's success underscores the immense spending power of Black Americans in the wine market and serves as a powerful reminder to the industry of the critical need for diversity and inclusion.
