Fawn Evette Weaver (née Wilson; born 1976) is an American entrepreneur, author, and CEO known for her groundbreaking work in the spirits industry. She is the founder of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey and the Nearest Green Distillery, having made history as the first African-American woman to establish and lead a major spirits brand.
Early Life and Career
Born in Pasadena, California, in 1976, Fawn Weaver is the daughter of Motown Records songwriter and producer Frank Wilson. Her early life included experiences with homelessness, yet by the age of 19, she had founded her first company, FEW Entertainment, specializing in public relations and special events.
Uncovering a Hidden History
Weaver’s journey into the spirits industry began unexpectedly in 2016 after reading a New York Times article titled “Jack Daniel’s Embraces a Hidden Ingredient: Help From a Slave.” This article shed light on Nathan “Nearest” Green, an enslaved African American who taught Jasper Newton Daniel, known as Jack Daniel, how to distill whiskey in the mid-19th century. Green was recognized as the first African-American master distiller on record and was instrumental in developing the charcoal filtration method, now known as the Lincoln County Process, which defines Tennessee whiskey.
Intrigued by Green's overlooked contributions, Weaver embarked on extensive research, dedicating more than 2,500 hours and reviewing over 10,000 original documents and artifacts. She traveled to Lynchburg, Tennessee, and interviewed Green’s descendants, uncovering a rich history that had largely been forgotten. Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey launched with three main expressions: the 1856 Premium Aged Whiskey, the 1820 Single-Barrel Edition, and the 1884 Small Batch bottling. The brand quickly gained critical acclaim and expanded rapidly, reaching 12 countries by 2018 and all 50 U.S. states. In 2019, Weaver was featured on the cover of American Whiskey magazine, becoming the first African American to achieve this recognition.
The Nearest Green Distillery
In September 2019, Uncle Nearest opened its own production facilities, the Nearest Green Distillery, on a 270-acre ranch in Shelbyville, Tennessee. The first phase of the distillery included a retail store, a bottling house, and the Tennessee Walking Horse experience. Future expansion plans included a permanent visitor center and a Tennessee whiskey museum.
