Chris Christensen stands as a notable figure in the American beverage industry, recognized for his pioneering spirit and his commitment to diversifying the world of wine. Through his Sonoma County-based Bodkin Wines, established in 2011, Christensen achieved a historic milestone in 2012 by crafting America’s first sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. His journey from a non-drinking household in Iowa to an acclaimed winemaker underscores a philosophy rooted in breaking traditions and fostering inclusivity.

Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Christensen grew up in a family that emphasized education rather than alcohol consumption. Despite this background, his curiosity about wine was sparked during a college trip to Sonoma Valley while he was a student at Stanford University. This initial exposure ignited a passion that would eventually lead him away from a planned career in banking and into the wine industry. After graduating from Stanford in 2003, Christensen gained practical experience through various roles, including an internship at Gallo of Sonoma and work at smaller wineries in Dry Creek Valley, before settling at Medlock Ames.

Founding Bodkin Wines and the Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc Innovation

In 2011, Chris Christensen officially founded Bodkin Wines in Sonoma County, California. The winery's name, “Bodkin,” is inspired by a type of arrowhead used by English peasant archers during the Battle of Agincourt in the Hundred Years’ War, a nod to Christensen’s interest in medieval history and his affinity for underdogs who overcome challenges.

The following year, in 2012, Christensen achieved a significant innovation with the release of America's first sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. This endeavor was particularly challenging because Sauvignon Blanc grapes, when harvested early for sparkling wine production, can be excessively herbaceous. Christensen’s approach involved careful viticulture and a minimalist winemaking philosophy, resulting in a high-acid, low-alcohol wine that quickly became the flagship offering for Bodkin Wines. This sparkling wine was designed to be approachable and enjoyable for a wide audience, even described as the “ultimate brunch wine,” requiring no orange juice for a mimosa.

The creation of sparkling Sauvignon Blanc demonstrated Christensen’s experimental mindset, which continues to characterize the Bodkin portfolio. His wines often feature a signature style emphasizing high acidity and low alcohol, with minimal oak influence, making them refreshing and easy-drinking. Over the years, many of Bodkin Wines' offerings have received critical acclaim, with over two dozen scoring 90 points or higher from publications like Wine Enthusiast.

Advocacy for Diversity and Inclusion

Beyond his winemaking innovations, Chris Christensen is a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion within the predominantly white wine industry. As an African American vintner, he actively utilizes his platform to promote opportunities for aspiring winemakers and winery owners of color. He engages in speaking engagements, podcasts, and mentorship initiatives, sharing his knowledge and experiences to help foster a more equitable and representative industry.

Christensen views Bodkin Wines not just as a business, but as a vehicle for social change. He believes that the expertise he has gained should be passed on to others, particularly to those from underrepresented backgrounds. This commitment aligns with broader movements to amplify Black voices and entrepreneurship in wine, connecting his work to the efforts of organizations and individuals striving for greater representation in the beverage alcohol sector.

His contributions have been recognized within the industry, including being named a ‘Winemaker to Watch’ by Esther Mobley of the San Francisco Chronicle in 2017 and being selected for Wine Enthusiast’s 40 Under 40 Tastemakers list. Christensen’s blend of scientific understanding and artisanal craftsmanship, coupled with his dedication to making wine accessible and inclusive, has solidified his place as a significant trailblazer.

Lasting Impact

Chris Christensen’s legacy extends beyond the novelty of his sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. He represents a new generation of Black winemakers who are not only creating acclaimed products but also actively shaping the future of the industry by championing diversity. His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly those from marginalized communities, demonstrating that innovation and success are achievable even in traditional industries like wine. By breaking down barriers and advocating for greater inclusivity, Christensen contributes to a more vibrant and equitable American beverage landscape.

His work at Bodkin Wines continues to challenge conventional winemaking practices, producing a range of acclaimed wines that reflect his unique vision. As the wine industry increasingly recognizes the importance of diversity, Christensen's role as a pioneer and advocate becomes ever more critical, paving the way for future generations of Black-owned beverage brands and leaders.
