Brooklyn Brewed Sorrel is a non-alcoholic beverage company founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 2015 by Nzinga Knight. Knight, a first-generation Caribbean-American with Trinidadian and Guyanese heritage, previously worked as a fashion designer, launching her line in 2008 and appearing on Project Runway in 2014. She established the business to provide an authentic sorrel drink, inspired by her father's traditional recipe, after finding existing market options unsatisfactory. Her homemade hibiscus-spiced beverage quickly gained popularity, leading to the company's formation. The company's sole product is a non-alcoholic sorrel mocktail and mixer, based on a family recipe passed down through over 400 years of Caribbean heritage. Crafted from sorrel flower (hibiscus roselle), ginger, pure cane sugar, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, bay leaves, and orange peel, the drink undergoes a slow-brew process for a rich, sweet, and spicy flavor. Brooklyn Brewed Sorrel is distributed through select grocery stores in New York, other Brooklyn venues, and online, shipping across the USA, Canada, and internationally. The beverage has been recognized by Bon Appétit Magazine, Epicurious, and Vogue, and was served at a James Beard Foundation dinner. As a Black-owned enterprise, it is notable for preserving and sharing Caribbean culture through an authentic, traditional drink available year-round.
